Neither do the ignorant love wisdom or desire to become wise. Plato, The Banquet.

The problem of education The problem of education

The main books of Plato are the Republic where the central theme of justice is discussed; and the book the Banquet where it is discussed the nature and mysteries of love. Plato uses in his books the teachings of Socrates.
The teaching method that Socrates uses is called Mayeutics and consists in a series of dialogues that follow a logic and an argument to conclude with a synthesis that is a particular knowledge.
In The Banquet there is an opposition about the opinions of love. Socrates in his dialogues insinuates or emphasizes that beyond passion love, there is the love for the pretty, the beautiful; and being the most beautiful the wisdom, this would be the love of the god Eros. However, in exposing the problem of love for the beautiful affirms: "Neither do the ignorant love wisdom or desire to become wise, for this is the harshest thing about ignorance".
With this statement he is expressing a fundamental problem of modern education and continue: "thus, who does not believe he is in need of a thing, does not want what he does not think he needs".
For the ancient Greeks the most excellent virtue of the soul is wisdom, so for those who seek the truths of the soul and of love, they should seek the love for wisdom, the love for the beautiful. This is the idea that Socrates exposes when he talks about love.
But what is Wisdom?
Plato in his book the banquet suggests that there are two lifestyles; the life of ignorant people who are governed by the luck and the passion, and instead the lives of educated people who are governed by virtue and wisdom.
Wisdom is defined in many ways. Aristotle tells us that it is the supreme science, the mother of all sciences. The perfect science. The apostle Paul gives us a distinction between human and divine wisdom. The first would have their origin in the experience, the other in the divine inspiration. Thomas Aquinas tells us that wisdom is all that knowledge generated by the gift of counsel.
Beyond any definition the Bible tells us that wisdom is the fruit of the truth and the good love, wisdom avoids falsehood. Those who live according to the flesh, or to say those who lie, hide and confuse they "can not inherit the Kingdom of God ", that is the domain of the divine perfections, and among these perfections is wisdom. Wisdom is coherent, sensible, truthful, uplifting, diffusive. Some people may ask. It is useful the wisdom?. Wisdom is not about profit, it is a way of thinking. We live wisely or we live by the luck, we are wise or are ignorant, we choose.
