Jesus as spiritual master establishes with his teachings the foundations of the Kingdom of Heaven and wants to strengthen his disciples in the virtue of faith against the oppression of his enemies. Jesus explains to his disciples that they should never feel alone or abandoned. The love of Jesus (Agape) is fundamentally a force of unity: "That all of them may be one Father, just as you are in me and I am in you", John 17:21.
In the good love, the progressive and expansive love, our neighbor matters (empathy), the disciples for Jesus are his family and his concern, Jesus knows that he will not always be with them, and that when this happens they will need his help: "For it is written: ´I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered´" Matthew 26:31. Our Lord Jesus explains to his disciples that he will always be with them, if not physically, he will be spiritually, Jesus is a good friend and a good brother, as the Bible explains: "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" Matthew 18:20.
What Jesus is saying in this mysterious teaching is that he will be present among the disciples through the action of the Holy Spirit, as actually happened at Pentecost to give an example: "When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them" Acts 2:1-4.
The doctrine of the Kingdom of God for Jesus is more than a simple philosophy, it is the accompaniment and the spiritual guide of the Lord in the life of the Church, the communion of believers. Jesus is that person, that friend, who is to accompany us always, and especially in the difficult moments of life.
