Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above. James 1:17

The gifts of the Holy Spirit The gifts of the Holy Spirit

The spiritual gifts are perfections explain Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Teologiae, that's why the expression in the epistle of James: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above", James 1:17. We atribute to God the perfections observed in the creation; and God,or to say the divine, is the origin of all of them. Some of this perfections are divine attributes others gifts.
There are similar expression to the letter of James in the New Testament: Be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect, Matthew 5:48; Be holy because I am holy, 1 Peter 1:16; Be merciful just as your father is merciful Luke 6:36.
As for the passions we can only attribute them to God metaphorically. A typical expression in the Old Testament: "the wrath of God", is that, a metaphor.
In some cases, gifts are perfect virtues as the Council, the mercy, the perseverance.
In other cases they are dispositions of the character as the fruits of the spirit: patience, kindness, joy.
We can identify the spiritual gifts with the desire for the good (divine substance), the intellectual appetite which tends towards the universal good. The purpose of the gifts is not happiness, but the common life (common good with concord), the betterment of the society, the holiness and eternal life.
The Spiritual Gifts differs from virtues,  in that the last ones have their origine in the soul, or to say the desire for happiness.
The Gifts are related with the Beatitudes, explaining the beatitudes the returns of the spiritual gifts.
We are called to live the spiritual gifts we inherit from God, to live the culture of the excellence, to search the correct and the best, the best for the counsel and the best for the perseverance, the mercy and the constancy,  and so to reach our nature, the conformity to God.
