The truth will set you free. John 8:31

The truth will set you free The truth will set you free

In the Gospels the foundation of freedom is the truth: The truth will set you free, John 8:31. The expression is a metaphor, freedom in the gospels means capacity to decide, the phrase is a way of saying that nobody freely and voluntarily chooses the false.
Aristoteles in his Book III of Nicomachean Ethics , develop a theory about voluntary and involuntary acts and states in art 4: "the will is for an end, some think that its object is the good, and others that is the apparently good, if it is said that the object of the will is the good, it follows that the object desired by a man who does not choose well is not the object of his will", here Aristoteles suggests that when we do not know how to choose our acts well, they become involuntary and forced, in addition it is necessary to add that the truth is a characteristic of the good: I am the way, the truth and the life,  John 14: 6; way, truth and life are the characteristics of rectitude.
Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologiae, is more precise when he teaches about the truth from question 16.
The truth is the precise and the exact; Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologiae express to us: "the truth is the adequacy between object and understanding", question 16 art 1, from this affirmations is that all science is based on the truth.
The author also states: "the judgment about a thing is based on what is essential in it", question 16 art 1.
The essence of a being is the truth, and the will is based on the judgments of what we do about things.
Thomas Aquinas continues and affirms: "to the will corresponds the inclination to do what the understanding conceives", question 19 art 4;
The full will and the adequate judgment to the end of human activity can only be expressed based on the knowledge of objects as they are. We lose the capacity to choose the good and the virtue without the truth.
The erroneous knowledge of things resulting from falsehood, conditions the judgment, reason and decisión, giving rise to the expression: "everyone who commits sin is a slave of the sin", John 8:34
