What does the bible say about human immortality: explanation and meaning.

The gift of immortality The gift of immortality

The book of Wisdom belongs to the canonical books inside the Catholic religion, but not inside some Protestant groups. Its authorship is attributed to the King Solomon and is part of the sapiential books of the Old Testament, the book contains exhortations and advices dedicated to the wisdom within the context of the history in the Old Testament and completes the books of proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
In the book we find references to Immortality and more precisely the expression: In the familiarity with the Wisdom is the Immortality, Book of Wisdom 8:17. What means Immortality?
The term Immortality is frequently used in the Book of Wisdom. The concept of Immortality is not philosophical or ethical but rather theological or religious.
We find a reference to  human immortality in the New Testament only in Romans 2: 7. It is interesting to note that this term also appears in other religions or philosophies such as Taoism. The equivalent of this gift in the new testament is eternal life.
Human immortality means neighborhood with God, "intimacy with the wisdom". Remember that Immortality is a divine attribute, that is, a perfection not transmissible to man. Only God is Immortal.
We can understand the concept of Immortality in the book of Wisdom as that God can transmit us in a limited form in this physical plane his Immortality. Immortality interpreted in this sense would be the gift of health or Longevity, the good eld. There is a direct relationship between contemplation and health, Immortality accompanies contemplative activity and perfects it.
We must remember that in the time of Jesus, the longevity was considered a mystical secret only accesible to a few teachers, the average life in those times was very short. It is known in the history of many kings and emperors who went to temples and monasteries in search of this knowledge, as Alexander the great who visits the oracles of siwa and gordium.
The Gift of Immortality can be interpreted as an aspect of Eternal Life and must be understood inside the context of the adult life of man. Eternal Life is the most perfect activity of man according to Thomas Aquinas, and consists in a set of blessings that God gives as an advancement of the Life in Glory and among these blessings that God gives in this life is the gift of health.
