Spiritual relationships: Those who fear the Lord enjoy stable friendship, for as they are, so will their neighbors be. Ben Sira 6:17
There are many types of friendship, but friendship based on the goodness and virtue of friends is a gift from God, and the book of wisdom of ben Sira gives us a beautiful proverb about this: "Those who fear the Lord enjoy stable friendship, for as they are, so will their neighbors be" Ben Sira 6:17.
This teacher of wisdom tells us that the friendship of those who fear God is stable, that is, it is not subject to personal interests or changes in human passions: "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered" Proverbs 22:24.
The spiritual gift of fear of God is defined as constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability. Given this definition, it is logical that among those who share this spiritual gift exists this type of friendship, the fear of God is the basis of all spiritual perfection, and it is the gift on which faith, hope, and the word of God are sown: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right" Acts 10:34-35. The fear of God is the gift that makes us docile and well predisposed to the teachings of God and the opposite of this Gift is the hardness of heart and impiety (hostility to our neighbor). God-fearing men were Job, David, Solomon, Isaiah, and Daniel, they based their friendship with humanity on their friendship with God.
Among friends there is nothing more perfect than the friendship between people devoted to wisdom, Ben Sira is speaking to us in this proverb of friendship between wise men. This is so important that the Bible advises us that if we want to advance spiritually, we seek this type of relationship: "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm," Proverbs 13:20.
This type of friendship is also where the spiritual gift of concord is born, the union of minds and hearts: "How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity," Psalm 133:1. God sets us this ideal of friendship as the example that we have to follow in our spiritual relationships.
