The goal of the spiritual gifts is the common good
The Apostle Paul is the author of the first epistle to the Corinthians, the last part of the letter is dedicated to the ministry of the gifts or charisms, emphasizing that all of them are subject to the charity to achieve the common good:
"There are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good". 1 Corinthians 12:6-7
The Apostle Paul continues and mentions spiritual gifts related with the theology: wisdom, knowledge, faith, miracles, prophecy, gift of judgment, gift of tongues.
Paul does not speak about virtues.
To understand the gifts and virtues we need to understand the triple division of man: body, soul and spirit.
To the soul correspond the virtues, to the spirit the spiritual gifts and to the body the sin. So it comes the concept of to "live according to the spirit" and to "live according to the flesh".
Virtue from this point of view not correspond neither to good or to evil but an intermediate state between them, and in fact it is so because the function of the virtue of temperance is to moderate the passions.
Another view of the virtue or to "live according to the soul" is that this idea would correspond the psycological concept of mask. Or to say we seek cover under throught the virtue our dark or destructive side.
We could say that happiness is the desire of the soul and this is not intended to be good or evil but to live.
The gifts from the theological and metaphysical point of view are perfections whose origin is God. The gifts are a grace, that is, the gifts are free. The end of the gifts is life in common or communion.
The communion is concord with common good, the communion that includes the common good is how God desires men to live, communion is the social order instituted by God for the coexistence among men.
The common good is a gift, a perfection, but communion is a superior perfection, that is, a gift superior to the common good, just as eternal life is superior to mercy.
The spirituality, elevate us, perfect us and leads us to the most sublime activity, the contemplative activity, the union with God.
