The fundaments of christianity: "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty". John 4:15.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus teaches us the spiritual foundations of Christianity, but not from the point of view of mercy (compassion, gentleness, kindness) as in the Gospel of Luke, or of the beatitudes as in Matthew, but from the point of view of the gift of eternal life.
Jesus in practical terms explains that the spiritual gift of eternal life is the worship of wisdom, and this has a clear spiritual meaning because Thomas Aquinas Father of the scholastic philosophy explains that wisdom is both the substance and the essence of God, in other words, to speak of wisdom is to speak of God. For Jesus, eternal life is the spiritual water of the soul, man needs God internally and the answer to this need is this life that once obtained cannot be taken away, that is why it is eternal.
Jesus describes to us what the worship of wisdom consists of in a metaphorical sense, in his dialogue with the Samaritan woman in the gospel of John:
"Jesus answered, ´Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
The woman said to him, ´Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water" John 4:13-15.
For Jesus, the meaning of life is not to be happy as many ignorant people think, but instead, the meaning of life is to worship God in the purest spiritual sense and as a consequence of them come other spiritual goods such as longevity, peace, the happiness of the heart.
The contemplative life or adoration of wisdom represents the adult life of man and his integrity, which is achieved through the grace of love, and this life, which is true life, is the life that pleases God: "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth" John 4:23-24.
Eternal life is the realization of the Kingdom of Heaven in the consciousness of man, and for this spiritual gift we are the temple of the holy spirit.
